Torsion Spring Winding Direction & Torque Vector: Left-Hand vs. Right-Hand Winding

A design parameter unique to torsion springs — winding direction directly establishes torque vectoring and rotation limits. Sizing the wrong direction reverses mechanical return action.

What is "Winding Direction" in Torsion Springs?

Winding Direction specifies the helical chirality of the spring coils along their longitudinal axis. Unlike compression and extension springs whose action is purely linear along the axis, torsion springs operate via angular rotation. Specifying the helical chirality is essential because it dictates which rotational direction winds the coils tighter and which direction forces them open.

By standard mechanical convention: viewing the spring vertically from above, if coils advance clockwise as they progress downward, the spring is Right-Hand Wound (RH). If coils advance counter-clockwise, it is Left-Hand Wound (LH). Using the right-hand thumb rule: curl your right-hand fingers in the direction of the coils; if your thumb points along the spring axis, it is Right-Hand wound.

How Winding Direction Governs Operating Torque

Winding direction and applied torque follow strict physical rules:

  • Right-Hand (RH) Springs: Energy is stored when applied torque rotates the arms in a clockwise direction. Elastic recovery torque is exerted in the reverse direction.
  • Left-Hand (LH) Springs: Energy is stored when applied torque rotates the arms in a counter-clockwise direction.
The Golden Sizing Axiom: Always Load in the Winding Direction!
When torque is applied in the direction of winding, the coils contract inward and tighten around the central mandrel. This places internal wire fibers in favorable compression and maximizes fatigue life. Applying torque in the unwinding direction forces coils outward, induces severe eccentric bend spikes, and can cause sudden unseating or fatigue fracture in less than 10% of rated life.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Which winding direction is more common: Left-Hand (LH) or Right-Hand (RH)?

In domestic automated coiling lines, Right-Hand (clockwise coiling, RH) is standard for many machines. However, international standards (DIN / ASTM) frequently specify Left-Hand (LH). TOSTA manufactures both directions with 1-piece MOQ.

How can I visually identify whether a torsion spring is Left-Hand or Right-Hand?

Place the spring vertically and observe the helix slope from top to bottom. If the coils angle upward to the right, it is Right-Hand (RH); if they angle upward to the left, it is Left-Hand (LH). Alternatively, use the right-hand rule: curl fingers along the helix; thumb pointing along axis indicates RH.

Can winding direction be altered after manufacturing?

No. Winding direction is fixed during wire coiling and cannot be reversed by flipping the spring or altering legs. Reversing operational torque causes coils to unseat, open up, and fail rapidly. TOSTA recommends ordering 5–10 prototype samples for assembly validation.

Does a bistable toggle mechanism require double torsion springs?

Not necessarily. It can utilize a balanced double torsion spring (LH + RH twin coils) or a single torsion spring paired with a mechanical stop pin. Double torsion springs eliminate lateral tipping moments and provide smoother kinematic travel.

Can TOSTA engineers confirm the required winding direction from our CAD assembly?

Yes. Provide your 3D STEP file, kinematic diagram, or torque parameters, and our engineers will confirm the correct winding direction within 1 business day. Custom samples deliver in 1–3 days. Contact: +86 130-1246-1618.
