Shape Memory Alloy (Nitinol) Springs
Smart thermally actuated and superelastic springs leveraging reversible NiTi martensitic-austenitic phase transformations for autonomous mechanical actuation.
Shape Memory Alloy Spring Technology Overview
Shape Memory Alloys (SMA), predominantly near-equiatomic Nickel-Titanium (Nitinol / NiTi), possess the unique capability to return to a pre-programmed geometrical shape when heated above their crystalline transformation temperature (Austenite finish temperature, Af). During this diffusionless solid-state phase transformation from low-temperature martensite to high-temperature austenite, the material generates massive recovery stresses and significant mechanical displacement. TOSTA shape memory alloy springs harness one-way, two-way memory effects and superelastic behavior to provide reliable, self-powered thermal actuation without requiring solenoids, electric motors, or external cabling.
Key Advantages of Nitinol Memory Springs
Self-Powered Thermal Actuation
Requires zero electrical power or external wiring; functions simultaneously as a temperature sensor and mechanical actuator, automatically triggering motion across specific temperature thresholds.
High Mechanical Recovery Force
Produces immense recovery forces during the martensite-to-austenite crystalline phase transition—delivering up to 10× greater force output per unit volume than traditional bimetallic thermal actuators.
Reversible Two-Way Memory & Superelasticity
Capable of pre-programmed bi-directional two-way shape memory actuation under thermal cycling, as well as superelastic mechanical strain recovery exceeding 8% without permanent plastic deformation.
Frictionless & Silent Operation
Solid-state phase transition generates smooth, completely silent mechanical actuation without gearboxes, electric motors, friction wear, or particulate shedding.
