Disc Spring Materials Guide: 51CrV4, 50CrV4 & Inconel 718

A complete metallurgical comparison of DIN 2093 spring steels, stainless steels, and superalloys across elastic modulus, tensile strength, continuous service temperatures, and anti-corrosion surface treatments.

Why Alloy Selection Governs Disc Spring Reliability

Disc springs endure immense localized compressive stresses along their upper outer edge (Point I) and high tensile stresses along their lower inner edge (Point III / IV). Under dynamic cycling, improper steel grade or inferior heat treatment can cause premature micro-fissuring, rapid stress relaxation, or catastrophic hydrogen embrittlement.

Standard 50CrV4 (1.8159) and 51CrV4 (1.8159 / EN 10089) provide exceptional toughness and fatigue resistance for over 85% of general industrial machinery. However, severe corrosive chemical environments or temperatures exceeding 200°C necessitate specialized austenitic stainless steels or nickel-based superalloys like Inconel 718.

Surface Treatments & Corrosion Protection

Manganese Phosphating & Oiling

The standard finish for DIN 2093 50CrV4 discs. Retains protective lubricant film, reduces interlayer friction, and prevents micro-welding during break-in.

Zinc Flake / Geomet / Dacromet Coating

Non-electrolytic barrier coating that provides 500–1000+ hours of salt spray corrosion resistance without any risk of hydrogen embrittlement.

Precision Shot Peening

Cold-working process introducing high compressive residual surface stresses on the tensile tensile inner diameter, extending dynamic fatigue life by 300%–500%.

Electroless Nickel Plating (ENP)

Uniform 25–50 µm high-phosphorus nickel deposit providing exceptional wear resistance and chemical passivity for offshore oilfield hardware.
